TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of registered nurses who are involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and education of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
ACTIVITY PURPOSE
This activity is intended to assist nursing professionals in understanding how to manage patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.
STATEMENT OF NEED
An estimated 1.4 million people in the United States are living with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), a serious and complex group of chronic intestinal diseases characterized by inflammation of the bowel.1 Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are the most common forms of IBD.2 A continuum of drug therapy and surgical treatment options exist for IBD, each with distinct risks, benefits, and side effects.3,4 In addition, a growing number of emerging therapies for IBD are currently under investigation.5,6 Managing IBD can be complicated, and usually requires a lifetime of medical care.1 Disease course is impacted by many factors including genetics, treatment choice, adherence to prescribed treatment and lifestyle issues. More than 40% of patients do not adhere to their medication and thus a significant number of patients are not receiving the full benefits from their treatment.7 It is crucial that healthcare professionals have current education on IBD in order to effectively help patients understand their range of treatment options, the importance of adherence to prescribed treatment plans, and the many lifestyle factors that impact the diseases.
