Clinical trials test treatments for all stages
of cancer. A clinical trial may be the best
option for a newly diagnosed patient or
for a patient whose cancer has relapsed.
Participation in clinical trials by both
men and women and by people of all
ages and of different ethnic and cultural
backgrounds is needed in order to
continue to make progress in blood
cancers. Oncology nurses and social
workers have frequent contact with
patients and as such are well-positioned
to educate them about the potential
benefits and risks of various treatment
options.
- List the steps patients need to take to understand their treatment options
- Explain ways to help patients become active participants in their care
- Define informed consent for participation in a clinical trial
- Describe the financial matters patients with blood cancers face
- Review all contents of this activity
- Complete and submit the learning assessment and evaluation form
- Score at least 70% on the learning assessment
