FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES Jorge P. Parada, MD, MPH, FACP, FIDSA Jorge P. Parada, MD, MPH, FACP, FIDSA, is the medical director of the Loyola University Medical System Infection Control Program in Chicago, Illinois, and an associate professor of medicine at the university’s Stritch School of Medicine. He is also a senior research associate at the Center for Management of Complex Chronic Care at Hines Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Hines, Illinois. After earning his medical degree at the Lisbon Medical School in Portugal, Dr. Parada remained in Lisbon to complete a medical–surgical residency and to train at the Institute for Tropical Medicine. He completed additional residency training in internal medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook an Northport VA Medical Center. Dr. Parada went on to obtain a masters degree in public health from Harvard University while completing an infectious diseases fellowship at Boston University. In his neverending pursuit of further education, he also completed a health services research outcomes fellowship at Rush University and Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, before joining the faculty of Loyola University in 1999. Dr. Parada’s research interests include hospital epidemiology, emergency preparedness, and infection control with an emphasis on process of care variables related to Clostridium difficile-associated disease, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection, and device-related infections. Outcomes from his work have been published in such notable journals as Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, Journal of Infection, and Clinical Infectious Diseases. Dr. Parada has also served as course director for the Chicago Medical Society and the Chicago Department of Public Health’s programs on emergency preparedness for bioterrorism, pandemic/avian influenza, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). David G. Binion, MD David Binion, MD, has been co-director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, and director of Translational Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research at the University of Pittsburgh/UPMC from 2008 to the present, and he is a visiting professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He graduated with honors from Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts) and obtained his medical training at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine (Buffalo, New York) prior to completing an internal medicine residency in the Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University Program in Medicine (Providence, Rhode Island). Dr. Binion has extensive clinical experience with IBD, having personally cared for over 2,000 patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. His research efforts focus on defining the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human IBD as well as identifying high risk groups of patients and developing improved treatment strategies for these individuals. He has published over 350 manuscripts and scientific abstracts centered on IBD. His laboratory has focused on the microvascular biology of human IBD and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Dr. Binion is a recipient of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America’s Premier Physician Award. Ciarán P. Kelly, MD Ciarán P. Kelly, MD, is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, chief of the Herrman L. Blumgart Internal Medicine Firm, and director of Gastroenterology Training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts. He has been involved in patient care and research in Clostridium difficile infection for more than 20 years and leads NIH-funded research programs that evaluate immunebased treatments for C. difficile infection. Dr. Kelly is the author of numerous clinical and basic research book chapters, invited reviews, and more than 100 peerreviewed publications including articles on CDI that have appeared in Gastroenterology, Vaccine, Infection & Immunity, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine. |
